I’ve been freelancing for a long time—over 20 years. And I get some questions more than others. Here’s one big one, which people ask as soon as they realize how much I love my career: “What’s the real secret to freelance success?”
The good news is that there is definitely a secret.
Well, let me put some air quotes around that: there is definitely a “secret.”
The bad news is that it’s not a very sexy secret. It’s not like insider trading. I didn’t hear it from a guru on top of a mountain. I didn’t go through intense rites of passage in order to decipher the code.
In fact, many people know this “secret.” Entrepreneurs, musicians, actors, students, politicians … they all use the secret to create their own success.
Are you ready for it?
The Secret to Freelance Success is Consistency
Establish effective habits that impact your business and take consistent action and you will find success.
- Pitch five clients every day.
- Post valuable info in three Facebook groups.
- Comment on the Facebook posts of three potential clients.
- Listen to one podcast on business.
You don’t need to work insane hours to build your business. You don’t need to practice day and night to hone your craft.
No. The real “secret” to freelance success is doing things that matter every day. Setting aside even 10 or 15 minutes a day to grow your business will set you up for success.
Consistency and persistence are the keys you need to unlock the “secret” to freelance success.
It may not be sexy, and this is absolutely not a shortcut. But when you’re making $8,000 a month and actually enjoying what you do for a living, you’ll realize sexy is overrated.
Stick with it, my friend. Make steady, daily progress toward your goals, and I know you’ll be successful (however you define it).
Your turn! What consistent habits are you going to (persistently) instill in your schedule? Let us know in the comments below!
