A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[0:13] Nicki and Kate are going over some of the possible services to offer for your freelance business! There are plenty of options out there, so be sure to take note of your favorites!
[1:00] Kate points out that the term freelance for the purposes of the freelance success framework means providing services to businesses. While you could freelance directly to the consumer, it’s more lucrative to offer your skills to businesses.
[3:00] A starting point for deciding what service to offer is to evaluate if you would want to freelance using your skill from your day job. If so, great! Your search for what to offer is over.
[3:55] Our hosts explain that if you don’t want to freelance doing what you do at your day job, that’s totally fine. But, you do need to make sure that whatever service you choose to offer is a service that you know how to do.
[5:13] Nicki gives the tip that it’s completely reasonable to change your mind about which service to offer down the road. If after a while you decide you’d like a change, you just need to learn the new skill (if you haven’t already) and start offering that service instead!
[6:16] One of the great parts of starting your freelance business is you don’t need to spend a ton of money to get going. Kate explains that the only real cost beyond a reliable computer is your website–and websites are very reasonably priced these days.
[8:40] Our hosts give us another way to choose what to freelance in: think of tasks you’ve carried out in previous roles that you enjoyed doing that you could expand on. Remember, if you’ve done something for a company it’s something you could freelance!
[10:08] Nicki reiterates that there are so many opportunities for what skill to freelance so it’s important that you don’t limit yourself only to what you have heard of others doing. Try to think beyond your own perspective so you don’t miss out on the best fit for you.
[12:05] Nicki summarizes some key points that were discussed throughout the episode. Keep in mind that freelancing only adds flexibility to your career so embrace it and choose to offer a service you love to perform!
